I have always loved to draw and paint but I have never taken any portrait classes. In 2003, my family was living in Chicago and one evening after the kids went to bed, I grabbed a glass of wine and my old pencils and sketch pad. As I drew, the portrait suddenly began to emerge from the paper and at that point I knew that drawing was an activity I needed in my life.
I love drawing portraits for family and friends and I have drawn hundreds of portraits of parents, siblings, toddlers, newborns and pets for many birthdays, anniversaries, Christmases, graduations and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts. Occasionally, I get to see recipients response first-hand and those moments are truly special for me.
In 2014, my oldest son began his senior year of high school. We had lived in Tulsa for 8 years at that point, and I felt like I had watched his class of 85 students grow up before my eyes. I began drawing a portrait of each of his friends, and then realized that I actually wanted to take on the challenge of drawing all 85 kids in his class. It was a daunting task, as each of my portraits generally takes between 5 and 10 hours. But with the support of my family, I was able to complete the class in time for graduation.
